Paper 4 Chapter 4

Q UWA SY100 Chapter 4 Paper 4 For this assignment you will be examining a social problem in the United States which directly relates to a problem of socialization. The US has a relatively poor track record when it comes to teen sexuality. Our kids tend to start having sex earlier, use protection less often, and have higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, and abortion than teens in other developed countries. Like nearly all patterns of behavior we can look to aspects of our culture and specifically socialization to explain why we end up with this problem. For this assignment, I would like for you to watch the following video clip. Please be advised this is an educational video and it does contain some explicit material. I regularly show this in class, but want to give you a bit of a heads up. This first link is hosted by the organization making the video. They are a great resource for a variety of personal and professional reasons. Their web-site video has been problematic recently so the second link is an alternative for viewing if the first does not work. https://vimeo.com/5237334 As you watch this video, I would like for you to examine the type of socialization being provided in these countries compared to the US. Then write a two-page summary report of your observations addressing these three questions. 1) What Social Facts (Statistics) objectively indicate that there is a difference in the way US and European countries socialize youth about sexuality? 2) What different agents of socialization are being incorporated into the European model? Are these primary or secondary agents, and what is the cultural message being given by each? 3) How do the commercials and media campaigns use Symbolic Interaction to help meet the socialization goals of these societies? How are the symbolic meanings of sexuality, STDs, and pregnancy prevention, presented differently in Europe compared to the US? 4) Lastly, use the concept of Anticipatory Socialization, to explain why the European model is more successful compared to the General Socialization used here in the United States? Papers should be uploaded through the Turnitin.com link on Blackboard by the submission deadline.

Your culture plays a huge role in socialization. Different countries have different beliefs and roles. Each country has their own opinion and way of handling things than the United States. Compared to the United States, Europeans thoughts of condom use are more serious and mature. Their process of socialization has a completely different view. The type of socialization that Europeans provide is to always have a condom. Europeans feel like condom plays a huge role in sex. They trust that sex should not take place without a condom. Socialization shapes the image that the United States teens try to maintain.
